How to Install a Video Doorbell

  •
  •

If you want an easy way to increase your home security without buying an expensive security alarm system, try a video doorbell. Starting at only $99, many of these systems are battery-operated and easy to install in under one hour.

Video doorbells increase your home’s security by showing you who is standing at the front door through a wi-fi video connection to your smartphone. You can actually “answer the door” from anywhere in the world (even on vacation!), so it always looks like someone is home.

Step #1—Buy your system.

You can order a video doorbell online, or find them in electronics stores.  Some kits even come with a security screwdriver, hammer, or mini industrial level. You may also need:

  • Screwdriver
  • Hammer
  • Power drill
  • Wall anchors (may already be included)

Step #2—Mount doorbell to your front door.

Hold the mounting plate up to the siding next to your front door, making sure it’s level (some kits come with a small level for exactly this reason). Mark the mounting holes with a pencil.

Next, use a power drill to create the screw holes. (If you have a brick or concrete exterior, you may need to use a hammer to add wall anchors.) Attach the plate to the siding, using the screws provided.

Once you turn the device on (and add batteries, if necessary), you’re ready to snap the doorbell unit to the mounting plate. Insert security screws to hold them together, if provided.

Step #3—Download the app to your smartphone.

The app for your specific device should be free and available on the App Store for both iOS and Android. Once installed, it will walk you through a setup “wizard” that asks you to create and name your new doorbell device.

Step #4—Connect the system to your wi-fi.

During the setup wizard, you will be asked to connect your new video doorbell system to your home’s wi-fi system—so have your password ready.

Step #5—Set your preferences.

You will be asked to create a personal security account, using your home address and email. You will probably need to enable your phone’s GPS system to confirm your location.

Step #6—Add a video recording service (optional).

Many video doorbell services now give you the option to add a video recording service for a small upcharge—so that you can save up to 6 months’ worth of front-door visits. It’s optional, but it’s an added layer of security for your peace of mind.

Now, you’re ready to answer your doorbell through your phone—even if you’re 1,000 miles away.
